Palm Springs, CA (November 3, 2016) - Shortly after 5 a.m. near Palm Springs, a MCI 1996 tour bus operated by USA Holiday, struck the back of a big rig, killing the driver along with 12 other passengers leaving dozens injured.
CHP has identified one among thirteen of the deceased victims as 50-year-old Tony Mai of Los Angeles. Officials have also identified two other victims but are delaying releasing their identifications pending the notification of their family.
According to CHP Indio Division Commander Jim Abele, the tour bus did not contain seat belts nor was a data recorder installed. The cause of the crash remains unknown and it is not identified if drugs, alcohol or fatigue played a factor in this accident. Though impairment may have not been the source of the crash, speed may have played a factor. Investigators stated that upon arriving to the scene, the tour bus was found entered 15 feet into the back of the semi-truck.
Investigators continue to review footage at Red Earth Casino where the 1996 tour bus had arrived at 11p.m. and departed by 4 a.m. Footage from nearby businesses are also being reviewed for any additional information.
