Due to the dangers resulting from electronic handheld devices and driving, the state of California outlawed texting and driving. In addition, drivers are required to use hands-free devices when talking on the phone. Lawmakers realize the risks of driving while distracted. Now, new studies suggest walking distractions can result in you being injured in a Los Angeles pedestrian accident.

Increase in Distracted Pedestrian Accidents

Recent studies suggest the amount of pedestrians being treated for accidents resulting from walking distractions has more than quadrupled in the last seven years. Studies have also shown that there has been an increase in pedestrian fatalities due to these distractions.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, approximately 1,152 people in 2011 were treated in U.S. emergency rooms for injuries suffered while walking and using electronic devices such as cell phones.

Where Pedestrian Accidents Commonly Take Place

As a pedestrian, you are always at risk of being injured in a pedestrian accident when walking in areas where motorized vehicles are close by. Some of the most common places where distracted pedestrian accidents occur include:

  • City streets and roads.
  • Parking lots in rural areas.
  • Shopping centers and adjacent parking lots.

Common Pedestrian Distractions

Many distractions can pose dangers to pedestrians. However, electronic distractions are becoming more prominent. You may be more at risk of being injured in a pedestrian accident if you are engaging in the following activities:

  • Texting.
  • Making calls on your cell phone.
  • Playing video games on your phone.
  • Listening to music on your phone or iPod.

Near Disaster Avoided

Recently, a Los Angeles man was nearly confronted by a black bear in a suburban neighborhood. The man was walking and texting his boss when he looked up and realized the bear was a few feet away. Fortunately, he was able to escape unharmed.

It Is Becoming an Issue

“People really need to be aware that they are impacting their safety by texting or talking on the cellphone,” Stony Brook University professor Eric Lamberg said. “I think the risk is there.”
