A series of summer Santa Monica pedestrian accidents have spurred the city into action. Though Santa Monica has seen a 3 percent drop in auto accidents, a cyclist and three pedestrians lost their lives over a period of 59 days this summer.
What the City Is Doing
City officials are engaging in a threefold approach to curb pedestrian accidents, including:
- Allocating $350,000 to contract with Alta Planning + Design to develop a plan to review data and trends about Santa Monica accidents involving vehicles and pedestrians.
- Focusing on areas near future Expo stations and neighborhood commercial districts. They will look at areas with unlit crosswalks obstructed by medians.
- Allocating $1 million in the 2012-2014 fiscal years for re-making and refurbishing crosswalks. The city will also promote its new website, www.smgov.net/WatchTheRoad. “Watch the Road” signs will be placed on city busses and garbage trucks to draw attention to the website.
