When you’re riding your motorcycle in California, the last thing you’re thinking about is an accident. But with 88,000 motorcyclists injured in accidents in 2013 nationwide, there’s a good chance you could be a victim of a motorcycle accident.

Unfortunately, motorcyclists are in greater danger than drivers of cars of suffering serious injuries in crashes because of the lack of protection between the motorcycle and the other vehicle. One common potentially fatal injury is a fractured pelvis.

Types of Pelvic Injuries

A pelvic fracture is a crack or break in the pelvic bones located at the base of the spine. There can be one or more fractures. There are two types of pelvic injuries:

  • Low-impact pelvic fractures. These often are the result of sport injuries or minor falls.
  • High-impact pelvic fractures. These are commonly caused by truck, automobile, and motorcycle accidents. High-impact fractures always require emergency medical attention to prevent loss of life.

Pelvic fractures are usually found through taking x-rays, but, in more complicated cases, you might need a CT scan or MRI. In some cases, symptoms arise over time, so you should be aware of what to watch out for.

Six Symptoms of Pelvic Fractures

Because pelvic injuries can be so serious, you need to see a doctor immediately. Symptoms you need to look out for following your crash include:

  1. Pain in the groin, hip, or lower back. This is the major symptom and can become worse over time.
  2. Abdominal pain.
  3. Feelings of numbness or tingling in the groin or legs.
  4. Bleeding from the vagina or rectum.
  5. Problems urinating.
  6. Having difficulties walking, standing, or doing other activities.
