The state of California has what is known as a "strict liability statute" when it comes to dog attacks.  This means that dog owners are responsible for damages and injuries caused by their dog.

Civil Code Section 3342 says: "The owner of any dog is liable for the damages suffered by any person who is bitten by the dog while in a public place or lawfully private place, including the property of the owner of the dog, regardless of the former viciousness of the dog or the owner's knowledge of such viciousness."

Make sure that you have liability coverage in case your dog bites.  Check with your homeowners insurance carrier.  You WILL be held responsible.  Even if your precious Puppy has never shown aggression, sometimes dogs can get scared or spooked and act out of character.

Should you be the unfortunate victim of a dog bite, know your rights.  Make sure you document the owners name and address of their home regardless of where the attack occurred.
