We all know that a Southern California car accident can happen in the blink of an eye, leaving you or a loved one with a serious injury. The car accident may even be the result of the other driver being under the influence of drugs.

Drugs have plagued this nation for decades and are responsible for thousands of deaths each year. A new government report reveals that many of those deaths involved fatal car accidents.

1 in 5 Drivers Killed Tested Positive for Drugs

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 1 in 5 drivers killed in car accidents in 2009 tested positive for drugs. The NHTSA reported that nearly 4,000 drivers with drugs in their systems lost their lives in 2009.

Researchers also indicate that these figures may not represent the whole truth, since only about 3 in 5 drivers who were killed in car accidents were tested. The number of deaths could be considerably higher.

Drugs Impair Drivers

Drugs are believed to affect a driver’s judgment and ability to respond to dangers on the road. This impairment could result in a serious auto accident. An experienced California personal injury attorney can help you hold the other driver liable for damages that you might sustain in a wreck.
