You are driving down PCH and you notice that the driver next to you is weaving in and out of his lane.  You also notice that even though it is dark outside, the vehicle’s headlights are not turned on.  It suddenly dawns on you that this driver may be drunk.  What do you do?  Can you prevent this person from causing a serious California drunk driving accident?

AAA, a not-for-profit organization of motor clubs, compiled a list of warning signs that would indicate that a driver is intoxicated.  These signs include:

  • Crossing the center line repeatedly
  • Driving into opposing traffic
  • Making abrupt turns
  • Driving too slow for conditions
  • Driving too fast for conditions
  • Stopping without reason
  • Weaving
  • Swerving
  • Drifting in and out of lanes
  • Inconsistent signaling
  • Failing to turn on headlights when it is dark outside

When it appears that a driver is in fact drunk, you should contact the local law enforcement right away and inform them that you need to report a suspected drunk driver.  They will ask you to describe the driver’s behavior and will want information about the vehicle, including the license plate number, color, make and model and any other distinguishing marks.  Be sure to give the exact location of the driver and the direction he or she is heading.

Whatever you do, don’t try to take the law into your own hands.  If the driver stops his or her car, you shouldn’t try to restrain that person, as you could end up getting really hurt.  You also shouldn’t try to stop the vehicle and don’t follow too closely.

It is unfortunate that drivers still get behind the wheel at an alarming rate, despite the known dangers of drunk driving.  If you have been seriously injured in a drunk driving accident in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, Orange County or other area in California, Steinberg Injury Lawyers can help you.  Contact a Southern California car accident attorney at our office today at (800) 989-6385 for a free legal consultation.
