A blow to the head is nothing to take lightly, as it can lead to a severe brain injury. It is well documented that traumatic head injuries can cause long-term damage.

Some experts now believe that repeated blows to the head, especially caused by sports injuries, can lead to a variety of progressive brain disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS).

A study led by researchers at Boston University looked at the brain and spinal cords of a dozen former athletes. Of that group, three had a history of multiple concussions and had already been diagnosed with ALS.

Researchers found that in each of the former athletes who had been diagnosed with ALS, there were deposits of proteins associated with ALS called tau and TDP-43 in their brains and spinal cords. Since people who have not suffered head trauma lack these protein deposits, researchers concluded that ALS was linked to head trauma.
