To a parent, there is almost nothing as terrifying as when their child reaches the legal age to drive. Getting a driver’s license is a rite of passage in America, and the hallmark of freedom for a teenager. However, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, teenage drivers crash four times more often than adult drivers. This is why it is so important to educate your teen driver on the dangers of distracted driving.

Luckily, the cars that today’s teen drivers are stepping into are a lot different than the cars of the past. Modern technology is helping to reduce the risk of teen crashes, and many of it is being built right into new cars. For example, Ford’s MyKey system and Chevrolet’s Teen Driver Technology both offer options to make teen driving safer, including speed alerts, speed caps, and volume control for the sound system. And, if you have an older car, there are many gadgets that connect directly to your vehicle’s OBD port and offer a chance for parents to monitor their teens’ driving. Hum by Verizon offers a full suite of features including vehicle diagnostics and emergency assistance.

In addition to built-in options and gadgets, there are many apps on the market that can assist parents in keeping their teens safe on the road. Check out the Lifesaver app, for instance, which block’s texts and calls on your teen’s phone anytime the car is in motion. Or, the Everdrive app – which monitors driving diagnostics and delivers them for later review. AT&T’s Drivemode app offers similar features, including silencing text messages, but also turns on automatically when the car starts driving more than 15 miles an hour. As a bonus, this one can be set up to notify the parent if a teen tries to disable the app.
