Studies have found that adult patients who have suffered severe brain injuries are at an increased risk of developing a long-term condition, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and dementia.  This news is frightening for the thousands of adults who suffer head trauma each year.

If you or a family member has survived a serious brain injury, you need to familiarize yourself with some of the possible long-term conditions that could develop.  Researchers have found evidence that one of these conditions includes Alzheimer’s disease, which is characterized by memory loss, dementia and impaired cognitive abilities.  One study concluded that a brain injury could interact with other factors to trigger this disease.

Parkinson’s disease has been linked to adult brain injury.  This disease can develop years after the initial injury, just when you think you are in the clear from any long-term repercussions.  Parkinson’s disease has many symptoms, such as tremors, stiffness, slow movement and stooped posture.

Dementia is also associated with a traumatic brain injury and includes two types, dementia pugilistica and posttraumatic dementia.
