A Montgomery County, Alabama jury recently awarded a nearly $1.3 million financial award to Michael Duey of Eufaula, Alabama, who suffered life-threatening injuries in a 2013 crash that was caused by a distracted driver who was using his cell phone at the time of the accident. The significant financial award will help Duey cover medical bills incurred for injuries he sustained in the accident—which include several fractures in his left arm, a broken hip, and broken bones in both knees. After the accident, Duey spent 31 days in a coma, was hospitalized for 47 days, and underwent several knee surgeries. Three years later, he continues to struggle with his injuries and faces a lengthy recovery period.
Caught on Video
The shocking accident—which involved Duey’s pickup truck, a rented box truck driven by Gregory Moore of McKelvey Mechanical in Tuscaloosa, and a school bus—was captured by the bus's onboard video camera. The video shows Moore swerving and clipping the rear of the school bus that had come to a full stop to let children out. Duey, who was driving behind Moore and whose view of the bus was blocked by Moore's box truck, is seen colliding with the rear of the bus. Cell phone records indicate that Moore was making work-related calls, suggesting that he was distracted at the time of the crash.
